This study was performed to examine effects of chitosanoligosaccharide on body weight gain, blood chemistry and liver function in rats. This product was administered by gavage for 30 days to three groups at the daily dosage of 0.75 g/kg (I), 1.5 g/kg (II) and 3.0 g/kg (III). Another group received saline and served as the control group. During the experiment period, body weight gains from all the groups were measured and recorded once a day. After the experiment (at day 31), blood samples were collected from all the animals to observe the blood chemistry . Moreover, liver tissues were collected and fixed in 10% formalin, paraffin embedded, and stained with hematoxylin-eosin, then examined under optical microscopy. By SAS statistical softwares, the experiment results showed that there was no significant difference in the serum ALT, AST, TBIL, UN, GLU (female) and CRE (female) contents between the treatment groups and the control one. The values of GLU (male), CRE (male) and CHO decreased in the treatment groups with chitosanoligosaccharide. Microscopic observation of liver tissues suggested that granular degeneration widely appeared in liver tissues of the control group, there was a vacuolization in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes in the control group, while there seemed no abnormal histopathology in the treatment groups. These results indicated that chitosanoligosaccharide can reduce body weight gains, cholesterol level, blood sugar concentration, eliminate fatty liver, activate hepatic function.
